63rd Christoph-Gärtner Auction: Collector’s Delight in the Golden October

A registered cover from the colonial section at Gärtner.

When the leaves turn and autumn arrives with its special atmosphere, a season of reflection and discovery begins for many collectors. Just as nature reveals its treasures, the catalogs of the Christoph Gärtner auction house open their doors to rare gems of numismatics and philately. From October 13 to 17, 2025, more than 10,000 lots will go under the hammer across seven catalogs. The joy of collecting often lies in the unexpected — in finding a long-sought piece, discovering special details, or securing the winning bid that meaningfully enriches one’s collection.

Rare Covers from the German Colonies

A particular numismatic highlight includes rare pattern coins (Lot 1500) as well as an impressive gold coin from China (Lot 1019), both of which will be featured in the auction. The offering is complemented by a wide range of coins, medals, banknotes, decorations, orders, and various collectibles (e.g. Lots 1137, 1022, 1023, 1024, 66, 666, and 414).

Philatelists will also find much to enjoy. A special catalog presents the collection “Austria – Newspaper Tax Stamps” by Dr. M. Gaster (e.g. Lots 7806, 7860, and 7845). In addition, bidders can look forward to a Bavaria specialty section with over 200 lots (Lots 5000–5206), rare covers from the German Colonies (e.g. Lots 6802 and 6794), Argentine postal stationery (e.g. Lots 1066678 and 1066688), and exceptional items from the postal history of South America (e.g. Lot 1068369). A strong section on China (Lots 2327 and 2022) rounds off the philatelic offering. Among the highlights is a mint never hinged example of the 1962 miniature sheet “Performing Arts” (Block MiNr. 8), starting at €3,000.

Outstanding individual Asian lots include a cover from the U.S. post office in Yokohama, Japan, sent via the United States to Switzerland (€1,400), and a 1904 Korean postal stationery card with additional franking via Japan to Belgium (€1,000). In the European section, one notable piece is a French cover of the third weight class, mailed from Paris on October 21, 1852, and carried by steamship via Liverpool to New York (€1,000).

The auction will take place at the Gärtner auction house premises in Bietigheim-Bissingen. Collectors may bid in person, online, in writing, or by phone.
